A couple months ago my wife and I were looking at possible new cars for her, and we did it old school. Going from dealer to dealer to dealer, giving out the same information over and over and over again, just to get some fuzzy numbers at the end that didn't mean much of anything. I actually don't mind doing this, but doing it while dragging around a nearly two year old, wasn't exactly easy. Then some personal stuff started happening, things got busy, and we never actually bought anything. We did learn that we both liked the Ford Flex and the Mazda CX-5 (for different reasons, obviously).
In light of all the troubles I've been having with my '11 Malibu (it got to visit TWO dealers on Monday), I decided to pick the search back up. My wife settled on the CX 5, as we've had precisely zero trouble with the '06 Mazda 3 she's owned since new, and we're sick of dealing with service visits.
I still don't have time to go from dealer to dealer, so I took a page from the book of Tom. I started emailing all the dealers in a reasonable distance for "An itemized, out the door quote" on a CX 5 equipped the way we want it. Man, is this easy! I've got three good, close quotes. I've filtered out the too high dealers (unfortunately, the one that is literally across the street from my work is $1000 higher than everybody else). I also filtered out the strokes who wouldn't give me anything in writing, or just wanted to talk about my trade-in (the good dealers didn't even ask about a trade-in).
I didn't even have to leave work. I'm never going back to the old way!
Now, if only they still had that beautiful blue available.

Nice! CX 5 is the best looking CUV on the market after the Porsche Macan.

The CX-5 is pretty nice, since there's no Mazda6 hatch or wagon available.
That shopping method makes so much sense and I wish I could go back in time and do it that way. I've never bought a newnew car for myself, but my wife's car was bought new and the process was less than enjoyable. Congrats on the new car.

I test drove one for my g/f when she was looking for a new car. I really liked it overall, but she ended up with a Ford C-Max in a similar shade of blue. She drives 40k miles/year for work, so overall it was a better choice.

We've had our CX-5 for going on two years and it has never been to the dealer save for oil changes and tire rotations. :) Averaging 26 MPG with all city driving.

Thanks, we don't have a new car yet, but the shopping is going well!

Wow, that is a lot of miles! I would agree that the C-Max is a better choice for her.
